Guatemala is a jewel in Central America. While it is a tourist destination to be sure it has not yet been expanded and developed as some of the other countries have been. The colonial charm of Antiqua and the hypnotic beauty of Lake Atitlan are must see destinations. The markets at Chichicastenango are an experience in colors,  sounds and flavors. Each community has their own unique textile and personality. While Guatemala is not known as a beach destination the Caribbean coast has beautiful beaches as well as the shores of the Pacific to the west.  Of course the Maya culture has a very dominant presence and the architecture here is a definite for those interested in the culture. Tikal’s expansive ruins symbolize this rich and complex country. Serenity and calm await the traveler in need of a respite from the computers, cell phones and constant interruptions.
